Training on Bio-Intensive Gardening (BIG)
For Food Security and Sustained
Agricultural Productivity
This is a three day training designed to equip participants with knowledge and skills in setting up and maintaining Bio-intensive gardens as community and individual household backyard model farms initially in 14 pilot island-barangays in the municipalities Bacacay (Cagbulacao, Cagraray, Mataas, Cawayan, Manaet, Namanday & Tambilagao) and Rapu-rapu (Hamorawon, Gaba, Buhatan, Galicia, Mancao, Liguan & Tinocawan) all in the Province of Albay. The training will provide opportunities to discuss BIG as a sustainable agriculture methodology, covering the key essential elements of soil management, crop management and pest management which are the core concerns of agricultural production.
The BIG training will enable the transfer of technology in a very short period of time utilizing experiential learning, combination of interactive lecture and hands-on experience.
The course, through actual demonstrations and practicum, shall feature the following characteristics of the BIG:
1) Intensive use of the area for the cultivation of vegetables;
2) Double-digging of plots for higher elevation of the soil and preparation of the plant beds;
3) Use of compost and other organic fertilizers;
4) Cultivation of “Indigenous Cultivars” (native planting materials);
5) Planning the plant cycle (types of vegetables to plant through different seasons of the year);
6) Natural pest management;
7) Seeds preservation for planting;
8) The necessity of the labor Intensiveness of the system
